Humanrights Monitoring Report December 2010

Murder: In December, total 140 people were killed for various reasons such as terrorist attack, robbery, clashes for land and properties, dowry, rape, eve teasing, etc. Among these victims 97 men 36 women and 7 were children.

Violence against women:

Dowry: In December, 4 women were killed for dowry. In addition, 5 women were severely tortured for this purpose. The deceased are Asma Begum (26) from Barishal, Irin Akhter (19) from Shariatpur, Dipa (21) from Narayanganj and Taslima Begum from Jhinaida.

Rape: In December, 12 women were raped 1 of  them was killed. The deceased is Rita from Natore. The other victims are from Narail, Gazipur, Chapainababganj, Dhaka, Narayanganj, Nilphamari, Bhola, Mymensing and Jhinaida.

Fve Teasing: In December, 51 incidents of eve teasing  took place around the country. Monir Hossain (45),a father ,was brutally killed by the stalkers in Chandpur for protesting against eve teasing. Furthermore, Chaity Akhter (17) from Madaripur and Zakia Begum (18) from Bhola committed suicide as they were taunted by the stalkers. The stalkers kidnapped a college student in Dhaka as she refused to marry one of the stalkers. A school girl in Barisal was severely wounded with blade, Moushumi Akhter (14) from Sherpur and Suma Akhter (17) from Barguna were viciously injured with a knife. Suma has lost her right leg for this.

Suicide: In December, 17 incidents of suicide occurred. Among them 9 were women and 8 were men. Family feuds, sickness, mental pressure, failure in love were the main cause behind the suicides. The places where these incidents occurred are Dhaka, Narail, Gazipur, Barishal, Narayanganj, Mymensing and Patuakhali.

Violence against the journalists: In December, there were attacks on 4 journalists in 2 different  incidents. In Barishal the president of Muladi Press Club and local correspondent of Daily Matabad Manir Hossen Rari were  killed because of a dispute over land. Some Chhatro League activists at Jahangirnagar University physically assaulted university journalist Ikbal Hossain, Daily Shakti; Palash Mahmud, the president of university journalist association and the general secretary Saeed Zunaid. This incident occurred due a dispute over sitting in the field.
